Maternity Clothes Are Broken

Remember Mimi maternity? Motherhood maternity? Yeah, me neither, but apparently there used to be stores that only carried maternity wear. Now-a-days, you can’t even find the maternity section at Walmart or Macy’s. It’s depressing.

As a woman experiencing my first pregnancy, I had high hopes for my pregnant OOTDs. I was sorely mistaken. The first item to not fit was my favorite pair of jeans so I went in search of a replacement pair at a few stores, NO LUCK. I did know it would be a tall order because it is a struggle to find non-maternity jeans in a plus size.

My next idea was to turn to the online stores. I have found I usually find stores have a better inventory of plus size clothes online, but again, my usual go to stores had little to nothing.

Insert the wonderful world of advertising.

I got an ad for maternity jeans at Old Navy. Old Navy is a store I wrote off a long long time ago. I tried on a few pairs of jeans in college and they fit so awkwardly. Needless to say, I was very hesitant to buy these jeans, but I said to myself “hey, what do you have to lose.” Once the jeans I arrived to my house, I tried them on and pleasantly surprised that they fit pretty well. I decided to look up my nearest old navy and check out what they had in store.

Once there, I did not find any maternity options but I did find a nice amount of plus size clothing. So what exactly did I find?

The High Waisted Billie Wide-Leg Trousers.

I got them in grey and in black. They have a  super stretchy waistline with a drawstring and felt my baby belly could grow happily in these.

Flutter Sleeve Swiss Dot Top

Mid Rise Taylor Bermuda Shorts (Now out of stock)

I also got the Flutter Sleeve Swiss Dot Top to let my growing belly breathe. Finally, I got the Mid Rise Taylor Bermuda Shorts in case of a spontaneous sunny day.

My faith in old navy was fully restored. When I was looking for items, I wanted versatility for work and non work outings. I think it’s important to call out that all of these items I purchased were not maternity clothing, I just purchased them in a bigger size. I will also say the one maternity item I did purchase (the jeans), I wore only once. I decided maternity jeans aren’t for me. I don’t like where the band sits on me and they feel like super low rise jeans that are on the verge of falling off me.

My biggest takeaway here is to do what works for you, where its buying a bigger size(which is not always easy) or ordering from a online store you wrote off years ago.

Wishing you good luck!!
